The NWFA Expo offers a wealth of educational opportunities for professionals looking to grow and expand their industry knowledge and technical expertise. Attendees can choose from numerous educational sessions facilitated by industry professionals, covering topics such as technical skills, marketing, industry trends, and sales. The education the Expo offers can help your business stay competitive and adapt to changing market conditions.

 

The Expo education sessions taking place on Wednesday, May 3, and Thursday, May 4 are included in your registration fee. Each participant will receive one CCU per session (up to four).

Pre-Expo Symposium

Tuesday, May 2 from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Part I: 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.
Certified Professionals (CP) Annual Update and Meeting.

Join the CP roundtable discussion to gain first-hand knowledge of where the program stands, what changes are coming, and our focus for the next several years. This meeting gives all CPs an opportunity to voice their opinion and share ideas to improve the program.

 

Part II: 9:45 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Stump the Wood Doctor, with Dr. Eugene Wengert

Eugene Wengert is the President of the Wood Doctor’s Rx LLC at WOODWEB, in Bishop, GA, and Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Wengert is the author of eight practical books and has published 500+ articles relating to the wood products industry. As a former professor and extension specialist at Virginia Tech, and researcher at the USDA Forest Products Lab in Madison, Wisconsin, Wengert taught 30+ practical wood processing classes and seminars each year for the wood products industry, including sawing, edging, grading, drying, machining, and gluing. Wengert’s teachings and writings have assisted many wood products manufacturers, inspectors, and consumers over the decades.

 

Wood expert Gene Wengert will be discussing all things wood. Subjects will include:

  • Wood Species Identification (red/white oak, hard/soft maple, hickory/pecan)

  • Analysis of several common natural and man-made characteristics and variations in species

  • Manufacturer drying defects - checks, splits, warp

  • The smell of wood

  • Effects of moisture- shrink/swell, relative humidity, hysteresis

  • Defining wood MC

  • Interior MC - Subfloor MC and the effects on wood floors

  • Solid vs. engineered wood flooring response to changes in MC

  • Installation challenges

  • Proper uses of the moisture meter

 

Wengert will be fielding questions from the audience throughout the presentation on specific topics, and has challenged the audience to “stump him.”

Protecting and Assuring the Successful Continuation of Your Business

Tuesday, May 2 from 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Learn strategies for succession planning and wealth preservation, and how to transition your business on your terms. Topics will include why successful businesses fail, coordinating succession plans with estate plans, addressing active vs. inactive children, liquidity issues, valuation methodologies, the types of buy-sell agreements, insurance funding mistakes, and federal estate/gift tax exemptions.

 

Leon Resnick and Terrance Resnick are partners in Resnick Succession Group, a business succession, estate planning, and life insurance advisory firm. They have worked with more than 250 trade associations helping business owners plan for the succession of their company. The firm also co-founded Elizabethtown College Family Business Center in Elizabethtown, PA.

ICRI Concrete Slab Moisture Testing (CSMT) Program

Wednesday, May 3 and Thursday, May 4 from 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Stand out from the crowd and gain fundamental education or full certification as a concrete slab moisture testing technician through ICRI’s Concrete Slab Moisture Testing (CSMT) Program. In addition to improving your understanding of what slab moisture tests actually measure and what the test results mean, certified individuals provide a higher level of confidence in the test results that are critical in the flooring pre-installation decision-making process or post-failure forensic investigation.

 

The CSMT program consists of two (2) course options:

 
  • Education Course - offering you fundamental education in concrete slab moisture testing.
  • Certification Course - offering you full certification as a concrete slab moisture testing technician.
