Learn about formaldehyde-free soy-based wood adhesives!

Visit the United Soybean Board (USB) exhibit, Booth #640, to learn why industry leaders—including companies like Columbia Forest Products, W.F. Taylor Co. and HempWood—are turning to soy-based chemistry for a variety of wood adhesive applications.

Besides performance, soy-based wood adhesives are formaldehyde-free for improved indoor air quality. U.S. Soy also is renewable and sustainable by nature to help industries meet a growing consumer trend.

Research funding from USB led to the development of a soy-based, formaldehyde-free resin that Columbia Forest Products (CFP) has used for more than 10 years. CFP has produced more than 150 million formaldehyde-free plywood panels using this technology. The engineered wood panels are compliant with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. Other uses include strong, sound-reducing, installer-friendly soy adhesives manufactured by W.F. Taylor Co. for flooring installations.

USB is a farmer-led organization that funds and supports research to commercialize new industrial applications using chemical derivatives from U.S. Soy. For more information, visit www.soynewuses.org.

Brands: Some of the brands and products using soy-based adhesives include: Columbia Forest Products; Solenis Soyad™; W.F. Taylor Co. (Resolute, Ridgeline, Ironwood and Aspen products); and HempWood.

  • Soyad Adhesive Technology from Solenis
    From the Solenis website:
Soyad adhesive technology is a patented, bio-based, formaldehyde-free adhesive system used to produce environmentally friendly hardwood plywood and engineered wood flooring.
    ...

  • From the Solenis website:

Soyad adhesives are water-based systems formulated with natural soy flour and a proprietary crosslinking resin. When blended together, the resin reacts with the protein in the soy flour to form a durable, water-resistant thermoset adhesive that is comparable in strength and performance to urea-formaldehyde-based adhesives.

Soyad adhesives provide a number of performance advantages for manufacturers of engineered wood products. Consider the following:

    • An industry-proven adhesive with 70-90% bio-based content

    • Eliminates formaldehyde-related health hazards for workers and consumers

    • The strength provided compares to other no-added-formaldehyde (NAF) technologies and traditional formaldehyde-based adhesive systems

    • Existing application equipment can be used to easily transition from a formaldehyde-based adhesive

    • Eligible for CARB Phase 2 exemptions

    • Qualifies for LEED points

Soyad adhesives help meet the growing demand for bio-based products and are the adhesive system of choice for manufacturers that want to comply with formaldehyde regulations and help improve indoor air quality. Over 150 million hardwood plywood panels have been produced globally with Soyad adhesives, making it the leading NAF adhesive for hardwood plywood in the world.
